BIO:
Caylin Sanders, Founder, CEO & President, launched EscapeMaker.com in September of 2000. Echoing the trend of Americans taking getaways closer to home and within a day's drive, EscapeMaker.com focuses on getaway destinations accessible by car and mass transit from the New York City metro area.
Ms. Sanders originally from Los Angeles, attended Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, majoring in theatre and art. After graduating Drew in 1995, Ms. Sanders worked in sales & marketing and design for firms like Time Warner-DC Comics and JP Morgan in New York City. In her spare time, she explored the surrounding area on local weekend getaways and day trips. After debilitating carpal tunnel surgery preventing her from intensive computer work, Ms. Sanders devised a way she could re-enter the workforce by using her sales and marketing experience to start her own local travel business.
In early 2000, Ms. Sanders attended entrepreneur-training classes held by the Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation, who would later connect her with S.C.O.R.E. and Community Capital Bank. After extensive research on trends in the travel industry, Ms. Sanders decided she had a viable business concept and proceeded to look for funding. In September 2000, her loan for $100,000 was approved by Community Capital Bank and Ms. Sanders launched the site from a storefront office in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
The site has established itself as a leading online guide to local weekend getaways and day trips within the Northeast - recognized by NBC News, Fox 5 TV, ABC 7 TV, The New York Times, Business Week, and The Wall Street Journal as a forerunner in local content. In addition Ms. Sanders speaks on E-Marketing practices, packaging and destination promotion to various tourism associations throughout the Northeast.
In 2005 EscapeMaker.com was granted a contract by I LOVE NY to promote tourism around the state. In addition, Ms. Sanders was honored with a small business award from S.C.O.R.E for her success with EscapeMaker.com and contributions to the tourism industry, and in 2007 by the New York State Tourism & Hospitality Association for her work as a board member.
EscapeMaker.com travels around the Northeast featuring partner advertisers in their tradeshow weekend getaway pavilion - most recently at the Philadelphia Travel Show and The New York Times Travel Show and in 2009, The GLBT Expo and The Adventures in Travel Expo.
In 2008 EscapeMaker.com received a grant from the NY State Department of Agriculture & Markets to promote New York Agri-tourism in a series of webisodes that will be webcasted through 2010.
Also In 2009, the site relaunched with a new design, a themed package focus, improved lodging searches, social bookmarking tools and an expanded itinerary making feature for users.
