Region: Long Island

Sharing an island with Brooklyn and Queens, the Long Island region is a natural and easy escape from hectic city life. Covering over 1,000 square miles, Long Island is chock-full of diverse places to stay (rentals, shares, B&Bs), things to see (lighthouses, state parks, museums, historic sites), and things to do (beaches, golf, nautical sports, shopping, dining). Wine fanatics won’t want to miss Long Island Wine Country, where over thirty wineries offer tastings and tours.

With white sand beaches that stretch for hundreds of miles, Long Island was made for NY summer weekend getaways. Popular vacation options include: the upscale Hamptons, the go-to retreat for affluent New Yorkers; Montauk’s undeveloped beauty with great surfing and fishing; car-free and gay-friendly Fire Island; the Rockaways, with the nation’s largest urban beach; and Jones Beach, the most heavily visited beach on the east coast and home to a popular concert venue.

While usually considered a summer destination, Long Island also offers plenty of winter fun, with cross-country skiing, sledding, and ice skating available at many of its state parks.
