Dear EscapeMakers,

The spectacular season of Syracuse-style Saint Patrick’s celebrations (spit that out 5 times fast) kicked off with the delivery of green beer to Coleman’s Irish Pub in late February! O’ Cheers to you! While that green beer is still flowing, on Saturday, March 14th, the greenest parade you’ve ever seen hits the streets of downtown ‘Cuse — St. Patrick’s Parade. Drawing an estimated 100,000 four-leaf-clover-hugging visitors to downtown Syracuse, the parade celebrates the Irish heritage and culture found in the ‘Cuse. Visit Kitty Hoynes for an Irish breakfast and live music as well. Check out the midnight painting of a Shamrock under the Green-Over-Red traffic light in Tipp Hill.  This signifies the official start of St. Patrick’s Day!

Next, bring on some ooey gooey goodness at "It’s Maple Syrup Time" at Beaver Lake Nature Center. Every weekend in March is your golden (golden brown, that is) opportunity to ring in spring with the celebration of the maple syrup season and mouthwatering mouthfuls of pancakes. Don’t make that flapjack stand alone, that’s pancake neglect! Cover it in a sweet blanket of syrup!

Speaking of neglect, make sure you’re catering to your creative, dramatic side with a touch of theatre in your life. The month of March is fantastically filled with fantasy, heart-wrenching love stories, musical comedies, you name it! See Syracuse Stage’s Up, The Diary of Anne Frank or Syracuse Opera’s Romeo and Juliet, or catch Appleseed Productions’ The Boys Next Door. Want more drama? Try Famous Artists’ The Drowsy Chaperone at Crouse Hinds Concert Theater, Mulroy Civic Center, or Rarely Done Productions’ The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me at CNY Jazz Arts Foundation. Had your fill yet? How about SU Drama Department’s Boy Gets Girl at Arthur Storch Theatre? Whatever your fancy, from a cold, hard slice of life to tales of the lovelorn with hay endings, ‘Cuse has it.

The Syracuse St. Patty’s Parade is giving "green" another meaning this year, focusing on being more environmentally friendly! Green ideas include using recyclable material in floats and encouraging parade-goers to travel together in carpools.

Keep your eye out for the wee "faerie folk," otherwise known as leprechauns at Coleman’s Irish Pub.These male sprites are thought to take the form of old men who enjoy partaking in mischief – hence why Coleman’s has a 15-inch leprechaun door to the right of the regular front entrance exclusively for these little devils, leading to where else but the bar! This may be the only establishment in the country where leprechauns are offered a special amenity.

Want more information on what to do?

Dear EscapeMakers,

Does winter last a bit too long in Syracuse? It sure does. Is there anything you can do about it? There sure isn’t. BUT, to make things better, you can at least go along with the old adage "if you can’t beat it, join it" and celebrate the season o’ snow with an exhilarating day of skiing, indulging during Downtown Dining Week, and partying it up at the Syracuse Winterfest. Plus, Valentine’s Day is coming up! Don’t wait for an arrow to stab you in the neck as Cupid’s reminder to plan something sweet for your sweetie.

Making the most of the cold weather does not include hiding from it under a blanket on the couch. Get out there and embrace the white stuff – go downhill skiing! (Try not to fall and literally embrace the white stuff, however. That’s no fun.) Central New York is packed with fantastic trails and terrain parks, including Song Mountain, Labrador, Four Seasons Golf & Ski Center, & Toggenburg Winter Sports Center. Choose from over 20 trails at each spot, then warm up on a wine trail or at a quaint B&B.

Thaw your belly post-slalom with a scrumptious three–course cuisine for just $25 at Downtown Dining Week, February 16th – 28th, 2009. It’s an ideal opportunity to break out of your "usual" eatery spots and try something new. Stop dialing that generic pizza chain already! Variety is the spice of life, not oregano.

Next, hop on all fours and dash over to the Syracuse Winterfest to catch the Human Dog–Sled Race! Sounds slightly insane, we know. Winterfest is 12 glorious days of indoor and outdoor events, parties, and chili and chowder cook-offs from February 12th – 22nd, 2009 that you just can’t miss! Thousands gather for events including the 2nd Annual Burger Bounce and the Margarita-Off. Burgers, margaritas and human dog-sleds? Add a monkey doing cartwheels and it’s a done deal! No monkey? Ok, it’s still a done deal.

Sign up for the "Chili, Chowder and the ‘Cuse’ Package" for the best of Winterfest, SU basketball, and overnight luxury. Chow on some chili and catch some crazy competitions at Winterfest, then switch gears for the Big East Game of the Week at the Carrier Dome. The Syracuse Orange will take on the tough Villanova Wildcats right in front of your eyes. Hit up a bar or two downtown to celebrate the ‘Cuse’s win post-game (not to jinx them or anything) and then rest your pom-poms at the Jefferson Clinton Hotel for a nice relaxing slumber and tasty breakfast in the morning.

Light your sweetie’s heart afire for Valentine’s Day with "Valentine’s Romance with the Symphony" package.

February 13th and 14th.

Relish in an evening of indulgences including a massage at Armory Massage Therapy, overnight accommodations at the Syracuse Wingate, two tickets to the Syracuse Symphony, and a backstage tour, among other treats.
