Celebrate! Today is National Roller Coaster Day! On this day in 1898, the roller coaster was patented. Where is your favorite coaster? Why do you love it? Is it the speed? The height? The thrill of losing your bearing (or maybe your lunch) in the middle of a loop? I’m partial to the wooden Dragon Coaster at Playland in Rye, NY. I’m kind of a chicken when it comes to actually riding a roller coaster, but I love that this one is a vintage classic, among several original rides within this historic amusement park which has been open since 1928. Among other wooden coasters, Boulder Dash at Lake Compounce in Lake Bristol, CT also gets rave reviews. And one of our Twitter followers reminded us of a hometown fave, the Coney Island Cyclone in Brooklyn! This old-school charmer has been clickety-clacking since 1927! My much braver husband loves Kingda Ka at Six Flags in NJ. It’s the tallest, fastest roller coaster on Earth, zooming from 0 to 128 mph in 3.5 seconds and catapulting you 45 stories into the sky. Do you also have nerves of steel? Then you’re the perfect candidate for Superman: Ride of Steel at Six Flags New England in Agawam, MA. Has anyone been on the Alpengeist at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg? It’s also among the fastest and tallest in the world! We would love to hear from you!
