By JONATHAN MENT Freeman staff Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, an Internet travel site has ranked Ulster County communities among the top 10 summer vacation getaways. Phoenicia, dubbed “the inner tubing capital,” and New Paltz described as where “Hippies meet the Huguenots,” ranked second and seventh. Destinations are near enough to New York City that in some cases a day trip is not out of the question. “Of all the areas we cover, we tried to pick some beach locations, some outdoorsy mountain areas, some gambling sites. It’s a cross section,” said Caylin Sanders, who launched the site www.escapemaker.com – last fall. The communities are among 52 reviewed thus far by the site’s travel writers. Sanders said feedback from users also played into the sites ranking. “Phoenicia’s not particularly known,” Sanders said. “It’s a sort of a little gem. New Paltz has something for everyone. For the history buffs you have Huguenot Street, for the outdoorsy buffs there’s the mountains. And there’s also the shopping.” “We love to see people attracted to this area,” said Wayne Gutman, supervisor of the town of Shandaken, in which Phoenicia sits. He called the attention “Wonderful.” The village-like community at the bottom of state Route 214 has more than just inner tubing to offer, Gutman said. “Many people refer to Phoenicia as kind of the hub of the sportsmen’s area up here. Its history is also rich with boarding houses. There are people who come up and visit because their parents and grandparents did.” Visitors to the Web site can create a printable personal itinerary with prices, directions, schedules and phone numbers.
