Reality is More Captivating than Fiction

Dear EscapeMakers,

Ripped from the case files of the Guardia di Finanza, stories of grave robbing, high-tech counterfeiting and international smuggling routes will be told during the groundbreaking exhibition Treasures and Tales of Italy’s Guardia di Finanza Art Recovery Team. With over 120 works of Etruscan and Greco-Roman art, “Treasures and Tales” marks the first time many of these pieces have been exhibited outside of Italy.

• 120 pieces of priceless works of Etruscan and Greco-Roman art
• Priceless pieces, once lost, stolen or smuggled now on view in the U.S. for the first time
• Each artifact tells a story of creation, loss and recovery

Making its only U.S. appearance in Wilmington, Delaware, “Treasures and Tales” is on display now through December 21, 2014 at Wilmington’s famed Grand Opera House and comes on the heels of several successful showings in Italy.

Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime exhibit!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 30, 2014

nyaaFishers, N.Y. – New York City consumers will get better connected to the state’s apple growers and cider makers thanks to a $75,000 grant just awarded from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

New York Apple Association (NYAA http://www.nyapplecountry.com) received the grant from a federal program established by the 2014 farm bill to support producers of specialty crops, which include fruits, vegetables, nuts and ornamental plants. The funds will be used to educate New York City consumers about the state’s apples and cider, and to encourage and help them to visit local apple orchards.

emsmallWe know consumers want to connect with the people who supply their food, this program will help them do that, said NYAA President Jim Allen.

NYAA will work with EscapeMaker.com, an online guide to local agritourism getaways, to conduct “The NYC Applelooza.” The campaign will provide New York City consumers with information about the health benefits of New York state apples, while also sampling the many apple varieties available from across the state. Information about visiting pick-your-own apple orchards will be provided at GrowNYC’s Greenmarkets (http://www.grownyc.org) across New York City, and at special events such as EscapeMaker.com’s annual Local Food & Travel Expo.

Increasing New York City residents awareness of the state’s apples and cider will help our grownycsmindustry to be more competitive in a crowded food marketplace, said NYAA President Jim Allen. Our industry is grateful to USDA and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets for making possible this outreach to an influential cross-section of the downstate public.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced recipients of the 2014 grant awards on Oct. 2. The bipartisan 2014 farm bill provided an historic $118 million for specialty crop block grant funding to states to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops and to strengthen U.S. agriculture. USDA allocated a total of $1.4 million to New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets for 15 specialty crop projects, including the NYAA project. For more information, read USDA’s press release or view the program’s description of description of funded projects.

The Spectacular Scenery of October

Dear EscapeMakers — It’s hard to believe the natural beauty of Corning and the Southern Finger Lakes could get any more beautiful, but that’s exactly what happens each year as the magnificent colors of autumn quietly take over the hillsides, dapple the vineyards surrounding Keuka Lake, and fill the valleys with shades of yellow and red and orange. But that’s not the only thing that’ll catch your eye this fall. If you’re looking for variety and color of a different sort, you’ll want to head to the many wonderful small town shops throughout the area where you’ll find one-of-a-kind antiques, locally made arts and crafts, exciting specialty shops, and fun trails that bring together some of the best chocolate, history, and glass arts to be found.

The Rockwell Museum

Celebrating the
Land and the People
of America

The trees won’t be the only things on fire this fall. Not when you have something as exciting as the On Fire! Exhibition at The Rockwell Museum featuring 100 pieces of pottery including historic works by Maria Martinez and some of the most talented American Indian artists working today. “These are vessels born of Native earth, crafted in fire, and displayed for both their historic importance as well as their artistic beauty.” The exhibition offers visitors a unique experience through interactive touch screens allowing them to learn about the history, craftsmanship, and artistry of the stunning pieces. The museum is large enough to take your breath away and small enough to take less than an hour. If you the kids are with you, they’ll love the museum too with fun interactive ways for them to explore (and kids and teens get complimentary visits). And don’t forget to check out the Museum Store for your own Western Art.

Something for the Serious and for the Casual Shopper

Whether you’re looking for a great deal or one of those prize purchases that’ll have your friends asking you where they can get one, the boutique shops located throughout Corning and the Southern Finger Lakes provide charm, pizzazz, and a whole lot of rare finds. Of course, break it to them gently that they’re not likely to find another item just like yours by assuring them there are plenty of unique treasures to go around. With quaint village squares and one of “America’s Most Beautiful Town Squares,” each of their communities offers its own special shopping opportunities with some focusing on antiques, others on local arts and crafts, and more. And we know all that shopping can build up an appetite which is why you’ll find some of the most popular restaurants nestled among the shops.
