The historic hamlets of Lenox
and Lee were best known as hideaways for the wealthy and famous as they flocked
to this area in the early 20th century.
With awe-inspiring scenic
vistas waiting everywhere you look, it's no wonder this area was a home and stomping
ground for a number of American cultural and literary greats like Edith Wharton,
Herman Melville, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Norman Rockwell.
In Lenox,
tour the extravagant neo-classical historic homes of literary legends. Take a historic
walking tour of the town and visit landmarks like the beautiful downtown library
and the Washburn House. Go horseback riding or bike around town and pop into the
art galleries. There is also access to skiing in the winter.
Find yourself in the picture-perfect
town of Lee, with its barbershop, town green and old-fashioned flair. Lee, once
a major industrial hub for marble and cloth, is now home to 65 outlets for shopping,
accessible by public bus. Famous for its 150-foot steeple Congregational Church,
Lee offers a fine assortment of boutiques and restaurants on Main Street as well.

LODGING
|
 |
There are many bed and
breakfasts and motels to choose from in the heart of both towns, as well as in the
surrounding area.
In Lee, Chamberry Inn or the Morgan House Inn on Main St.,
are good choices. The Black Swan Inn Best Western is reasonable starting
at $80/night, however you will have to take a taxi about a mile up the hill. The
inn is located on a lake and offers rooms with views, a lakeside restaurant, boats
and a pool. In nearby Richmond, stay at the beautiful Inn at Richmond with
rooms starting at $125.00 per night.
In Lenox,
we stayed at the Whistler's Inn, a lovely bed and breakfast at the top of
the hill in Lenox. It is walkable from the bus stop, but the innkeepers will fetch
you at the stop if you ask. This inn was once home to the nephew of the painter
James McNeil Whistler. Innkeepers Richard and Joan serve a delicious buffet breakfast.
An author himself, innkeeper Richard will tell you about the literary legends of
the area and entertain you with his anecdotes at breakfast. Another great option
in town is the two-century-old Village Inn.
For the ultimate in luxury,
stay at the Seven
Hills Country Inn or the all-inclusive Cranwell Resort and Golf Club
starting at $130 per night. They are just a quick taxi-ride away.
For the ultimate in relaxation
try a spa retreat at the Kripalu Center, located on the outskirts of Lenox.
They offer reasonable shared and non-shared accommodations and all kinds of programs
and classes, including yoga and meditation. They are just a short taxi ride away
