Introduction

By Joan Cutten

Cold Spring, NY is a historic town with gorgeous river views. George Washington is said to have popularized the name Cold Spring after he drank from a spring during a visit.

Cold Spring became a thriving village with the creation of the West Point Foundry in 1818. In 1848, the new railroad transported workers as well as the foundry’s heavy cannon used by the Union Army. When the foundry closed in 1911, so did rail traffic to the town. In 1973, the center of town was designated as a historic district and has since been rediscovered.

Cold Spring makes for the perfect romantic weekend or active daytrip. In recent years, this river hamlet has become a mecca for both antique lovers and hiking trail blazers.

The antique shops are endless and will surely fill an entire day of browsing. Locals tell us new business is moving in everyday. In addition, The Appalachian Trail is only 1 mile from town, making Cold Spring an ideal base camp.

Main Street runs down a sharp hill intersected by the train tracks (making it a hike in itself). Relax at the bandstand on the other side of the tracks, and share a picnic as you watch the boats pass by.
